Quick definition
An options Greek measuring sensitivity to changes in the risk-free interest rate. Rho matters most for long-dated options; for typical short-dated retail trades it is usually the smallest Greek in play.
Direction and magnitude
Calls have positive rho — higher rates increase call value because holding a call is cheaper than holding stock outright. Puts have negative rho for the mirror reason. A LEAPS call on a large index might carry a rho of +0.30 or higher; a weekly at-the-money option often has rho near zero. In a stable rate environment, rho is background noise; in a Fed-repricing environment, it becomes a real input.
When to actually care
Traders holding long-dated positions across a scheduled central-bank decision see rho contribute to P&L in a way that theta and vega alone cannot explain. Any options analysis that anchors on "the Greeks" without at least glancing at rho for LEAPS structures is incomplete.
